I was a student of Andy Vaught's at Byram Hills; he had a great impact on my life and I fondly remember his English classes. He was a kind, supportive and thoughtful teacher. I have no doubt that he had a similar impact on other students over his many years of teaching. Condolences to his family and loved ones from the whole Cummings family.

- Chris Cummings, Brooklyn, NY

My condolences to the Vaught family. I know the Learning Center will greatly feel the loss of his intelligence, his warm smile and his shared memories. It was a true pleasure to know him.

Heaven gained another angel this week. No truer friend was Andy. I could always count on an instant smile, a witty comment and attentive listener when I was in his company. He was a true educator who made this world a better more compassionate place. The loss of this dear man will be ever with me; until we meet again.

- Mary Speir, Savannah, GA

This is very sad news. Andy was such an inspirational teacher and friend. The world will truly miss him and the lights will burn dimmer without his wit, his kindness, his intelligence and his generous spirit. Andy was a gifted teacher who has remained in my memory as a favorite colleague of mine from Byram Hills. I will miss him.

- MaryAlice Hickey, South Salem, Ny

- Jim & Peg Sylvester, Plymouth, MA

I grew up with Andy. He lived on 190th Street in the Bronx and attended Tolentine grade school and high school. I lived on University Ave about a half block down the street. He was a favorite of my mother. If I was going out and Andy was with me, my mother always felt I was in good company. I am sorry to learn of his death and have a wealth of fond memories ,. My wife and I will pray for him and his family. He was a joy to know.

- MIKE O'BRIEN, REMSENBURG, NY

My memories of Andy begin on a Wednesday morning at The Learning Center. I remember marvelling at this man, hunched over and walking with his cane, who never complained. I remember marvelling at this man who regardless of the topic possessed such a wealth of intelligence. Mostly, however, I remember this man and being so grateful for acknowledging me each and every time our paths crossed. It was his greetings that I held tightly to, for almost a year, when others seemed oblivious to my presence. And when my day comes to return to TCL, it will be those greetings, from a gentleman of the highest degree of kindness, that I will truly miss. My sincerest condolences to his entire family.

- Marsha Hoilman, Savannah, GA

A fine gentleman with shared outstanding skills

- Roland S Summers MD, Savannah , GA

To Mr. Vaught's Family, My deepest sympathy for your loss. I am so saddened by this news. My name is Jennifer and I had the privilege to learn from Mr. Vaught as an English teacher at Byram Hills High school in the late 70's/early 80's. I adored Mr. Vaught, affectionately known to many of us as Uncle Andy. He was insightful, clever, warm, generous and incredibly kind with his unforgettable teddy bear personality. We were fortunate to have him as a teacher in English and as a truly respected role model. I hope your memories of Mr. Vaught's will bring you comfort. I, and so many others, will never forget him. With Respect, Jennifer Tarlow

- Jennifer Tarlow, New York, NY

Virginia and I wish to express our deepest condolences for your loss. Both of us graduated from Byram Hills and you should know your father truly had a profound impact on our lives. His passion for teaching was infectious, his style inspiring, and his laugh contagious. He made us realize that reading wasn't a homework assignment but an entry to a richer world; he taught us that writing was an expression of our thoughts, hearts, and souls and not just a quiz to regurgitate facts; and he reminded us that English was the foundation of everything for the rest of our lives. Thank you for sharing him with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

- Richard and Virginia Doetsch, Armonk , NY

Fran, I am sure you remember me as the lady outside Smith Bros wanting to go to the ER with you. I always enjoyed taking one of his classes at the Senior Center in Savannah. He always had his own special chair as rightfully he should! We recently moved to a CCRC near our daughter in Chapel Hill. Thus the NC change. May he rest in piece. Fondly, Sally Hammond

What a treasure of a man was Andy Vaught. His keen and deep knowledge of so many topics was just the topping on his kindness and compassion. And gentle. Oh my, how very thoughtful and warm. Andy certainly leaves the world a better place by his having been in it.

- Robert Pawlicki, Savannah, Ga.

I was so sad to hear of Mr. Vaught's passing. He was a great teacher at BHHS in Armonk, and he touched many students' lives. I will always remember how patient he was with me (as were so many of his colleagues) because I was one of his more "energetic" students. What a wonderful man (Mr. Vaught, I know this isn't a sentence, but it is all that needs to be said.).

- Dan Heimerdinger, Woodland Park, CO

It didn't matter what Andy taught or what he talked about. It was always well documented, enthusiastic and from the heart. When Andy began a lecture, the thought always ran through my mind, "I wish students everywhere could have teachers like Andy Vaught." Andy was the classic inspiration for understanding and learning.

- Jane Kahn, Savannah, GA

Andy's passing leaves an empty place in my heart and at The Learning Center. He was my favorite person there, a truly wonderful lecturer, teacher, classmate and friend. He is greatly missed and will be dearly remembered always. My deepest sympathies to Fran and all of Andy's family. Please take good care of yourself, Fran--and come back to The Learning Center as soon as you can--we're all waiting to see you there.

My condolences to the entire Vaught family. He was my English teacher at Byram Hills in the 80's and was undoubtedly one of the best instructors I've ever had. I always enjoyed his passion for literature, empathetic nature, kindness, and often hilarious disdain for those who showed indifference to the power of the classics that he had us read. I regret that I was not able to tell him how much he meant to me. He will be missed. -Andrew
